Virus Protection

The reality is that you will receive viruses through email or other means.

To work out how to best protect your network against the risk of Viruses, you must first understand how they come in and the best ways to detect them. Source can implement a multi-level virus protection strategy for your network that ensures that viruses are stopped before they can do any damage.

The multi-level approach

Global Data recognise that Email and Internet browsing are now the two most common places that companies are most at risk of receiving an email. As a result we break down virus protection into two stages:

  • Front End Protection

Global Data use a Web or Mail gateway with content filtering capabilities to detect the presence of a virus often even before it is detected by the virus scanner. MailMarshal & WebMarshal provide advanced protection to your enterprise by being able to perform content and text scanning on all Web and Email traffic being transferred. These preferred options allow us to look deep within the content for signatures that would indicate a virus.

Using this front-end protection we are able to detect and remove viruses as they pass through this gateway, before they get to mission critical servers. Both of these products also allow for virus scanners to be inbuilt within their content scanning stage as well.

  • Back End Protection

Data cleared by the gateway is then passed to either the Mail Server, Proxy Server, or directly to the users PC. It is at these locations that Global Data implement a centrally managed enterprise virus solution. Source manages and support products such as Norton Antvirus, McAfee, and Inoculate. These solutions are configured so that all software updates, virus definition files, logging and monitoring is handled from a central management console.

Global Data recommends that the virus scanner used on the front end gateway and the virus scanner used on backend systems are from two different vendors. E.g McAfee on the front end, and Norton Antivirus on the back end. This gives the customer the assurance that if one product misses a new virus, it is likely the second one will pick it up.
